Firewall program or a hardware firewall client?

Software firewall for vista
or a full blown hardware firewall client, for protecting the whole network.

A hardware firewall client basic task is to regulate some of the flow of traffic between computer networks of different trust levels. Typical examples are the Internet which is a zone with no trust and an internal computer network which is a zone of higher trust. A hardware firewall clients function within a network is similar to firewalls with fire doors in building construction. It is used to prevent network intrusion to the private network.

If u only need a few computers protected, it is worth considering a software firewall program for each individual computer in the network. There are several good solutions as a firewall for vista, or other systems. U can also get a free firewall for vista that will do the job, however not with the same features as a commercial one.

Great but...The router works great and is easy to set up. Very nice utilization of Dyn DNS for assigning different FQDNs per external interface. The 'but..' part is the VPN- I still havnt gotten it to work yet. Guess Im actually going to have to read something other than the provided docs on this one....

Great product though- totally happy w it!

Reviews:
Stable and feature rich router at a good priceI am the sole IT person for a company that has several branch offices and they are all equipped with one of these routers. They are updated to the latest firmware which may play a key role in my success with these routers, but so far I couldn't be happier. Not one has had a problem that couldn't be resolved with a power cycle. I am not doing anything too complex with these as their DHCP/DNS functions are being handled by a windows server and there is no need for VPN yet, but the expandability is good to have. Port forwarding is in use and working fine and the internet access policy, although not the most robust I've seen, it does the job. Internet access is quick and the setup is relatively easy. I am A+,NET+, and CCNA certified, however I don't think the setup requires a professional touch as the web access GUI is pretty intuitive. Lastly the body is good at keeping the unit cool, is easy to mount, and has a pretty small footprint. To combine all of this with a price tag that any power user or SOHO can afford makes it 5 stars to me.

Reviews:
New to Sonicwall and LOVE it so farAfter battling with different VPN solutions for many years, our IT guy recommended the Sonicwall appliances. Our small business wasn't used to bucking up $300+ for routers. Looking at the $$$ wasted in the past on home grade hardware, we should have invested in this type of appliance years ago.

The GUI is pretty intuitive if you know what you're doing. To echo other reviewers, you need to have a certain level of understanding before tackling the advance config options. So far, we've seen better performance and reliability. I'm sure we'll experience the same with the security features as well.

Totally didn't workIt took me a night trying to set up this wifi router, but it didn't work at all. It can't detect the network connection type. And whatever type I input, it doesn't help at all. I had to revert back to the old wifi router which had worked fine except that it had to be rebooted every week or so.

Reviews:
stable as router-onlyDevice seems stable in router-only for a web server, email server, ssh, and a few other services. I don't plan on using the VPN features for my company provides me with cisco software.

My experience with NetGear metal blue boxes: FVS318v1, FVS336v1, and [obsolete?] fr114 have been good. They've been stable enough as long as you leave them alone and not make soft or hard adjustments, configurations or cables that is.

My FVS318v1 have been running since 2004. Its stable as long as I don't plug/unplug cables.

I don't remember what happened to my FR114. I remember it was good but probably replaced it with something more advanced. Or it may have been that one of its ports fried.

While this is a stable device, it is dated. It features wireless 802.11g but it does have current security features like WPA2 with RADIUS.

The device operates cold. After removing the one screw at the bottom and removing the cover carefully because the single short unshielded antenna wire is also attached to the bottom half, then powering up the unit for a few hours, I found that the chips [integrated circuits/ICs] are just warm.

Issues:
------

Unplugging cables can make the device stop routing, but not completely crash. I'm not sure what are the factors. Most of the time I can change cables without any noticeable problems.

Its nice that this device has port address translation or PAT, but it was a little confusing at first. The manual only mentions that a port like HTTPD 80 can be translated. But it does work. BTW the manual kind of sucks. It sometimes refers this device, FVG318v2 as the FVS318v3.

Lets say you have a web cam running on port 80 and you already have a web server on port 80, and you want to translate it to port 3000 so that a user on the internet can go to [...]:3000 for the camera. You would 'add service' and choose port 3000. Then go to 'firewall' and 'inbound' rules. You would choose the newly created service (port 3000) and point it to your camera's IP and click 'translate' and put in port 80 (referring to your camera).

There's no power switch, I guess its not a big deal. But there is a reset button.

It takes approximately 50 seconds to boot.

Some notes:
----------
WWAN or WiFi light is useless. It just stays on if wireless is activated and off if disabled. Data transfer is not indicated at all.

Otherwise, nice light show. The eight ports plus the WAN port shows actual data transfer so that you can kind of guess what's going on by the flickering.

Misc:
-----

It seems to be capable of having two WAN ports but the second WAN just isn't wired. My guess is from boot-up logs. It records that WAN 0 is up and WAN 1 is off.

There's also a secret telnet port. I don't know what the user/password is yet. Root and admin doesn't seem to work.

Reviews:
Solid performer at a great priceThis little unit does a great job of providing Wireless N and Wireless G signal to my home network. I've been very pleased with how well it's able to handle all the computers on my network and I've been able to start taking advantage of services like Hulu for streaming video.

It would be nice if the unit was able to use dd-wrt, and the version I have has the v1.0 hardware which won't work with the v2.0 firmware.

I got this on sale for a great pricand have been very happy with the performance.

Reviews:
Great specifications - poor implementationI recently upgrade bandwidth. In testing download speeds I found that I was not getting the advertised speed. This was due to the older router that I was using. It did not have the processing power to provide higher throughput. I found this product that provided the specifications that I needed - the capability to route higher bandwidths, VPN capability and a built in gigabit switch. I am also a huge Netgear fan because of their track record of reliability (in my experience).

I received the router and did some basic configurations. I put the router into service making sure to reset all of the equipment connected to it. I found that I could connect to the switch, but it would not route traffic to the internet. I upgraded the firmware and still had the same problem.

I requested an RMA from Amazon which was processed very quickly and requested a new unit. I received that unit and went through the steps to put it into service. The unit connected and performed great. I was able to use internet and take advantage of the higher bandwidth. The next morning I went to use the internet and was unable to access it. I rebooted the router and was still unable to access the internet. After some troubleshooting I was still unable to make the router work. I disconnected it and put in a 6 year old Linksys and was back up and running.

I'm now searching for a replacement unit. It probably won't be a Netgear.

Reviews:
-13Works fine, easy setup, much faster than prior routerI bought this to replace a Linksys BEFW11S4 router, which had recently developed a habit of going catatonic and having to be power cycled.

The WAN port is connected to a Comcast-supplied cable modem; on the LAN side I have an Ethernet-attached laser printer, a wired Mac, and a couple of Airport Express wireless routers that typically have 2 or 3 laptops connected.

Setup was straightforward; Comcast runs DHCP on the WAN side, and the router connected immediately. I changed the LAN side IP address to match the staticly-configured devices on the LAN; I didn't even have to reboot the router for this change to take effect.

The one thing I couldn't seem to do was change the username (from the default 'admin'), but at least I could change the password.

Performance is dramatically better than with the old router; before I was very lucky to get as much as 1Mbyte/second on downloads, now it's pretty consistently over 2.

It's only been running for 2 days, so I don't know yet how good the stability will be.
